COFFEE PRODUCING REGIONS

SÃO PAULO

Coffee growing was one of the pillars of economic development in São Paulo and is part of its history, so much so that the sides of the coat of arms are adorned with fruiting coffee branches, symbolizing the importance of this agricultural activity.
Coffee cultivation is still very present and with large productions in the State, in several regions, highlighting the grouping of poles considered references in coffee growing: the Alta Mogiana, the Media Mogiana and the regions of Marília and Garça, Ourinhos, Avaré, Region Pinhal and other municipalities. The division of regions is based on similarities in geographic characteristics, climate and technological packages used.

Marília e Garça

In the region of Marília and Garça, the expansion of coffee took place a little later, at the beginning of the 20th century. Humidity is low, which makes it possible to produce a drink of excellent quality that earns awards to the region. Mechanized harvesting is a common practice, as the flat topography favors the technique, which optimizes working time, reduces labor and, consequently, reduces production costs. Arabica is predominant, with thousands of trees, and family farming. The plateau brings together thirteen municipalities with coffee plantations. The five largest producers are Garça, Gália, Vera Cruz, Alvinlândia and Álvaro de Carvalho.

Ourinhos e Avaré

The municipalities of Piraju, Tejupá, Timburi, Fartura, Ourinhos and Sarutaiá stand out among those that produce the most award-winning coffees in the region. The biggest problem faced by the producers is the relative humidity of the air, which caused a greater fermentation in the coffee. The solution found was to adopt the peeled cherry type. Ourinhos region is the third most productive in the state. Coffee characteristics: medium body, elegant, with citric acidity, aromas of lemongrass and lemongrass and a sweet finish.
