ABIC will meet with the Public Ministry of Espírito Santo to discuss ways to combat fraud in the sale of coffees

On the 30th of August, Wednesday, the Brazilian Association of the Coffee Industry (ABIC) will have a meeting with the Public Ministry of Espírito Santo and with the Coffee Industry Union of Espírito Santo (SINCAFÉ) to discuss ways of combating fraud in the sale of coffee, considering the changes in Ordinance 570, already in force throughout the national territory, which gives space for the action of consumer protection bodies to act against complaints of adulteration in the product.

Pavel Cardoso, president of ABIC, Celírio Inácio, Executive Director, and Felipe Moreira, lawyer for Institutional and Governmental Relations of the Association, will discuss the mechanisms of the legislation, pointing out the role of the public power in the face of fraud, and will inform how the Association can collaborate in actions to promote quality coffee consumption in the state. Cardoso explains the importance of ABIC's presence in the state: “Espírito Santo is one of the main coffee producers in Brazil. It is absolutely vital that we are close to the associated industries and the government of the region to collaborate with the improvement of the quality of the product offered to Brazilians”.

The idea is to propose a term of cooperation between the entities and define a series of actions to be adopted by the bodies to improve the system to combat unfair competition and the violation of the rights of coffee consumers.

Association has already discussed the issue in Minas Gerais

In July, representatives of ABIC and Sindicafé-MG met with the prosecutor Glauber Sérgio Tatagiba do Carmo, coordinator of Procon-MG, the public prosecutor's office of the State of Minas Gerais responsible for planning, elaborating and coordinating the State System of Consumer defense.

The promoted meeting focused on the establishment of efficient mechanisms to combat clandestine coffee industries and the trade of products unfit for human consumption. “Dialogue with the coordinating body of Minas Gerais consumer protection policy has been fundamental to ensure compliance with legislation and increase the effectiveness of market monitoring actions carried out by ABIC”, stated Inácio at the time.

According to the representatives of the Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of Minas Gerais, forwarding the reports of products considered unfit for consumption arising from ABIC's monitoring is of paramount importance for the performance of Procon-MG, since based on this technical information, the Public Prosecutor's Office may initiate investigations against the offenders.
