Brazil’s specialty coffee scene has just taken a decisive leap. The Brazil Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA) and the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) have announced a historic partnership: the adoption of the Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) as the official protocol for evaluating Brazilian specialty coffees. The agreement was signed during the Specialty Coffee Expo in Houston (USA), positioning Brazil not only as the world’s largest coffee producer and exporter, but also as a global reference in innovation and quality.
At EllerS Coffee, where quality, traceability, and curation are core values, we are closely following this transition. This is more than just a new technical method — the CVA represents a cultural shift in how the value of coffee is recognized. And, as always, we’ve chosen to be at the forefront of these transformations.
A New Standard of Evaluation
The Coffee Value Assessment broadens the understanding of what makes a coffee truly special. Developed by the SCA, the protocol takes into account not only the sensory aspects of the beverage but also its affective, physical, extrinsic, and descriptive attributes. This enables a fairer, more inclusive, and more contextualized reading of coffee quality — honoring the real value that each lot carries, from farm to cup.
This new standard is fully aligned with EllerS Coffee’s commitment to offering coffees with authenticity, identity, and recognized excellence, while respecting the journey each bean takes before it reaches those who choose us.
Education and Evolution Across the Chain
Beyond standardizing evaluations, the agreement between BSCA and SCA also includes a strong educational component. BSCA will lead the expansion of the SCA Education program in Brazil, offering technical training and international certifications to professionals across the coffee chain — from growers and graders to roasters and quality managers.
This initiative strengthens the sector as a whole and resonates directly with the work we do at EllerS. In an increasingly competitive and demanding market, training and adaptability are essential to uphold the integrity and excellence of what we deliver.
A More Transparent and Connected Future
With technical support from the SCA, Brazil now joins a global ecosystem where language, standards, and quality criteria are unified. Following in the footsteps of Colombia, which has also adopted the CVA, Brazil moves toward a more transparent, inclusive, and connected value chain.
In practice, this means more clarity in negotiations, more opportunities for producers, and more confidence for those who consume specialty coffee consciously. And for us at EllerS Coffee, who value every link in this chain, it means continuing to innovate with responsibility and purpose, even amid challenging change.
