The coffee consumption landscape in the United States remains strong and promising, as emphasized by Bill Murray, president of the National Coffee Association (NCA), during the opening of Encafé 2025. With 66% of Americans drinking coffee daily—averaging three cups per person—the beverage maintains its position as a consumer favorite, especially among younger generations. Despite increasing competition from other caffeinated drinks, coffee remains preferred for its energizing effects and cultural value. These figures reflect not only a well-established habit but also a significant window of opportunity for producers and exporters worldwide, especially Brazil.
The economic importance of the coffee sector in the U.S. was also highlighted with impressive figures: 2.2 million jobs, $343 billion in economic activity, and $38 billion in tax revenue. These numbers underscore coffee’s strategic role in the American economy—not just as a consumer product, but as a driver of income and employment. Given this context, the NCA has officially requested the U.S. government to exempt coffee from the recently imposed 10% import tariff, arguing that price increases could negatively affect consumption—particularly during times of economic uncertainty.
The trade relationship between Brazil and the U.S. in the coffee sector is long-standing and solid, with Brazil supplying approximately 25 million bags of green coffee to the U.S. each year. The imposition of tariffs could disrupt this partnership, directly impacting consumer prices and the broader supply chain. The initial positive response from the U.S. government to the NCA’s request suggests openness to negotiation, acknowledging coffee’s importance in American daily life and the economy. This development highlights Brazil’s strategic role in global coffee supply and the need for balanced trade policies to keep this vital market strong and accessible.
